Hi !!! Friends - Welcome to our Homepage
MEMORIES OF BESANT NAGAR & ADYAR
The
first fifteen years or so (upto 1985) our beach and the 4th
Main
Road in particular, were quite and smooth.
Ofcourse all of us in and around Besant Nagar, enjoyed the sublime nature and
calmness around. The 10 (or) 12 shops built by TNHB on 4th
Main
Road, nearer the beach, had no takers in the
beginning. An enterprising Punjabi youth opened up COZEE, an eatery that earned
all praise and support by the public, especially the young ones and the outside
visitors and so, he expanded it to almost half of the shopping area. Ofcourse,
Kottackal Arya Vaidyasala Doctor too found it a good outlet to serve the
residents in EBFO colony and surrounding. They were the two who volunteered in the
eighties and now the entire stretch and the shopping complex is over flowing
with all sorts of shops. An old resident of 4th Main
Road, told this writer that ours is the
Ranganathan street for Besant Nagar.
In
the seventies and even eighties, Baby Taxis were in plenty. But, seldom they
preferred to come to then Besant Nagar after 6
pm, unless you pay double the fare. On contract, today tourist cars
and autos willingly ply anytime of the day or night at no extra cost. These
days on Saturday, Sunday and other holidays it is a sight to see hundreds of
bikes, cars, taxis parked in all Roads and Cross Street too, by those visiting
the beach and or the worshipping places.
Beautification
on Elliots Beach by corporation. This is one subject being discussed by all
sorts of people at all forms and quite frequently. It is better if the beach is
left as it is particularly the sandy area in
its original puritan form that existed for several years, unpolluted by petty
traders. Not only periodical cleanings arranged, provisions must be made for
usage of Toilets and also eradication of menace from stray dogs. Users of this
salubrious beach, must also keep in mind that it is part of their duty to add
to its purity and never allow to get spoiled.
